There is no denying the importance of life insurance. As an integral part of your financial plan, life insurance can protect you and your dependents in the case of loss of income due to death. For a young couple, insurance is especially important as they have years of expenses ahead of them. From mortgage payments to their children's education, life insurance is the ideal vehicle to protect assets and offset expenses. But, as obligations dwindle over time, older retired couples might wonder if life insurance is really all that necessary.

After all, their children have left the home, their debts and mortgages have been paid off and the monthly insurance premiums may just be considered an unnecessary expense. Under these circumstances, one might consider terminating one's life insurance policy. Another reason for wanting to terminate your life insurance policy may be that you just can't afford the premiums anymore. Due to illness, loss of employment or other commitments, the monthly premiums are getting more and more difficult to meet. Is termination your best option then?

However, any financial expert would advise you against terminating your policy prematurely. Life insurance is a long-term commitment and should not be treated as a mere investment tool or a quick-fix device. If you terminate your policy ahead of schedule, you will end up paying additional charges and fees. If you have a term life insurance policy and you cancel it, you will receive nothing in return as there is no cash value component attached to such policies.

With a permanent life insurance policy, you would have built up a cash value along with your premium payments. When you terminate such a policy, you need to pay a surrender fee in order to access the cash component. Often the surrender value will be less than the total amount of premiums paid over the years. If you have already taken out a loan against the policy and have not repaid the amount at the time of cancellation, you might not get anything in return. Additionally, there may be taxes incurred as well. Apart from all the warnings against the charges and fees that you will incur, ultimately terminating a life insurance policy leaves you and your family vulnerable once again. In such troubled economic times, the peace of mind attached to knowing that you are protecting your family from financial difficulty is priceless.

Here are some other options you can try out before terminating your policy irrevocably:

If you can't afford your insurance any more --

Review your coverage -- Speak to your insurance company and see if you can opt for a lower coverage amount for a smaller premium. Still keep in mind your needs though and make sure that the cover is enough to meet them
Comparison shop -- Look around and compare products of other insurance companies to make sure you are getting the best deal for your situation.
Reduce other expenses -- As far as possible, try and keep your policy active. If it means cutting back on other expenses, it would be a worthwhile sacrifice. You may have purchased your policy when you were younger and in better health. Canceling it now and applying for a new one later on will only put you in a higher premium bracket unnecessarily.

If you feel your policy is not needed any more --

Gift the policy -- Did you know that you could gift your insurance policy by naming a particular charity as your beneficiary? If you feel that you can live without your life insurance benefits, you have the right to change beneficiaries from your spouse or family member to the charity of your choice. You will also receive a charitable deduction for the cash value of the policy.
Sell your policy -- Another viable option is to sell the policy. There are several companies that will purchase the policy from you. As they will continue to pay the premiums, they will receive the death benefits after you die. For this option to be considered, you have to be over 65 years of age. The amount paid for the policy might vary from company to company so do your homework before finalizing anything.

If termination is your only option and you have a term life insurance policy, all you have to do is stop paying your monthly premiums and the policy will stand as canceled. In case of a whole life policy, you need to get the full picture from your insurance agent. You need to determine how much cash value you will receive if you terminate your policy and how much taxable income will be generated as a result of the encashment. Attached to all of the suggestion listed above are tax ramifications, therefore please speak to a certified financial planner or insurance expert before making any decisions.

Over the last 50 years, the debate on selling life insurance policies has only gained fire. Is selling term vs whole life insurance coverage plans killing agents and enriching clients? Look at the dilemma ignited and fueled by low rate cheap internet term life versus whole life insurance with high commissions.

In excess of 600 companies selling life insurance compete unfairly, having their agents compare apples to oranges to lemons. Every conceivable mishmash of term and life insurance is blended into an easily digestible lemonade combination. Einstein could not finish high school let alone taking on the greater task of developing a formula for comparing life insurance rates.

That is because instead of one true formula, there are 2,400 formulas. Each life insurance company has at least one formula for comparing its best selling term to other insurers, plus a formula showing why there best selling whole life insurance coverage is the best. Then they have an illustration how their top selling term coverage beats out buying whole life from any competitor. Last, they have an illustration why buying their whole life insurance plan is superior to purchasing any insurance providers cheap term.

The policy scramble name game. First you have whole life insurance coverage, and then you have life insurance policies called, "straight life", "life endowment at age 100", simple life, and ordinary life. Four more plans for selling the exact same whole life policy. Numerous options exist for an agent selling "all risk", no cash value", term life insurance. The term could be straight term, annual renewable, 5 year renewable, 10 year renewable, straight decreasing, mortgage decreasing, and many more. The 6 term types mentioned here could the same company, and all at selling at different premium rates offer all.

Each year there are new crossbreds added to heap. Some pay cash dividend values, others provide none. Popular derivatives like Universal Life when introduced were going to end all the term vs whole life insurance confusion. You could make your own pie, with a certain amount of pure risk term, grouped in an orderly process with cash value whole life. This did not end the controversy, as now there was another selling choice that agents heavily promoted.

Commission is no longer a factor, at least among independent agents. Career company agents are typically paid 15 to 20% less commission to sell term insurance policies. The whole life policies, more profitable to their home office, gave them a higher incentive to sell. Today you can find independent life insurance carriers that provide various forms of whole life, universal life, and term insurance all at a high first year commission.

Individual policy rates are no longer a factor. You cannot judge an insurance policy by looking at its rate. However a very short time ago, one of the largest term life insurance companies (with AIG) as its first three letters got into a earth destructing bind by combing the lowest rates with absolutely some of the highest commissions. With 99.5% of insurers not so greedy, how do you compare apples to apples? Rates, company age, commissions, overhead, financial investments, policy riders, mortality tables, and underwriting requirements can be researched, and you still will not know which apple you should be selling or buying.

The proper way of buying or selling life insurance policies Insurance is a matter of total risk, and only so many dollars exist to cover only these seven major risks. These are for providing risk plans for sufficient life insurance, car, homeowners, major medical, disability, retirement, and long-term care. How many insurance agent sellers, and policy buyers sit down, and at one time figure out the entire picture. They don't. Insurance is mainly bought by either price (like cheapness), commissions, or by what a prospect is solicited with.

Try this. Come to my house, and I will show you my risks and assets. I have a bank check for $10,000 and tell you to handle all my insurance needs. I would then tell you that you are in competition with 2 others, and I will take the most logical plan. Do you think this is fair? I am giving you a vast selling opportunity, and testing your integrity. Should I care if you increase the cash value of my life insurance policy to provide more retirement benefits or assets? Likewise does it matter if I get some cheaper term insurance so a mortgage disability income plan could go into effect?

Insurance agents have not got their act together in over 100 years. In this information age, they do not have another 20 to wait. People do not need an extreme education on insurance. Insurance agents need to become extremely educated on adapting to their client needs on a total insurance concept.

Universal term life insurance is a combo of term life insurance and universal life insurance. It is a kind of term life insurance. Term life insurance is insurance for a specific term period for instance from 5-30 years. Term life insurance is meant for people who have a financial liability such as a house t be insured. Term life insurance policy is of three kinds- universal term life insurance, one-year renewable term insurance policy and adjustable term life insurance.

Universal Term Life Insurance is a novel and refreshing concept in the cash-value insurance contract. It is deemed that in comparison to other cash-value insurance policies, the universal term life insurance policy provides more transparency and flexibility.

Talking abut universal life insurance first we find that this insurance that is a type of permanent life insurance offering the low-cost protection of term life insurance and savings element that gets invested to build a cash build up; is also a transparent and beneficial insurance scheme. In the context of life insurance policies, the term 'transparency' means that the policy is unbundled, or broken down into savings, expense and protection components. For instance after the life insurance company receives a premium from the policy owner, it calculates a charge for expenses and adds it to the rest of the cash value policy. After this the life insurance company pays for the mortality charge, any additional charge, out of the cash value of the policy that pays for the protection of the life insurance policy. The amount so taken out also combines interest to the remaining cash value. In toto this policy acts as your savings account as well as a one-year renewable term account.

The transparency of the universal term life insurance is also reflected by the fact that the amount the premium payer invests into the policy is recycled into various features of the policy. This is of great benefit to the owner and even to the company indirectly.

The flexibility of universal term life insurance is about the premium and death benefit. The policy is quite adaptable in the sense that the policy owner can increase as well as decrease the premium at his discretion but in accordance with the concerned life insurance company. For instance changing the death benefit can affect the rate of growth of the cash value. So in case the death benefit increases unexpectedly, the life insurance company intervenes to ask the insurer to qualify again for the universal insurance on the grounds of evidence of insurability. Thus in order to avoid this re-qualification due to health and job related issues; you should not make any sudden ad significant increases in the death benefit of your policy.

However prior to purchasing a universal term life insurance make sure that you have in hand a written contract or agreement that delineates the manner in which the policy takes up the federal income taxes. This is mainly due to the fact that sometimes under prevailing tax laws, when it comes to federal income taxes the death benefit can be disqualified as being term life insurance. As a result the beneficiary bears the brunt by paying hefty taxes on the death benefit after the death of the insurer.

Finding the right car insurance policy can certainly be a drag. With thousands of different insurance providers, coverage plans and prices to consider, it can be more than just a little confusing. However, with a few helpful pointers in mind you should have no trouble finding a great deal on car insurance and getting a policy you can actually afford.

One of the most important steps of all to getting a car insurance policy is getting a car insurance quote from any company you are considering. You need to compare each car insurance quote to the next to find the best deal. There is no other way. Each company may offer you a different quote and keep in mind that some insurance providers do offer a discount upon signup. For some this is a one-time thing, for others it may go on for a specified period of time, usually around three to four months. After that, your rates may go up and this is something you need to inquire about right from the start.

There are a few pieces of information these insurance providers rely on in order to come up with a car insurance quote for you. Typically that includes your age, driving history and what make and model of vehicle you drive. The younger you are, the more you can expect to pay for insurance. Also, the more accidents and other marks you have on your driving record, the more you can expect to pay.

Basically, the better driver you are, the more rewards you get because the less you end up paying in insurance. If you tarnish your record by getting into automobile accidents, whether or not they were your fault - and they are much more damaging on your record if you were the one at fault - speeding, or otherwise receiving a mark on your record, your rates go up.

You may see the rates offered change drastically from one service provider to the next and wonder why, and that is because each service provider has their own separate requirements and qualifications. As long as you take time to get a car insurance quote before signing on any dotted lines, you should steer clear of high risk, expensive car insurance policies and get one which is just right for you.

It does not have to be a huge challenge to find a reliable and affordable insurance provider, as long as you know what to look for. These are the basic necessary steps towards finding the proper insurance policy and becoming legal to drive your vehicle on public roads.

Generally, we are very cautious while taking a loan or a life insurance policy to save those last minute surprises. But most of us have a misconception about general insurance that choosing a tailor made policy will take care of you and your belongings. Besides the required coverage and sum insured, it is important to ensure that the final policy document of a general insurance should comply with all the terms that the agent / insurer has agreed with you.

A few things that should be cross checked in a GI policy

Personal Details-

In case of health insurance policies even a misspelled name or a wrongly entered age can cause rejection of a claim. For others, a full description of the property has to be given to the financier. Commercial policies should have correct door numbers if the insurance is for a building and correct serial numbers in case of machinery.

Vehicle Details-

Vehicle models or seating capacity can be entered wrong if the software of the insurance company is not updated with that particular vehicle model. If you have made any alterations in the vehicle, like seating, LPG kit etc, check whether it has been entered in your policy. Errors in registration numbers can also cause disputes when claims arise.

Hypothecation-

If your belongings are hypothecated to any bank or financial institution, the details of the same should be mentioned in the policy. This is because in case if the property is lost, the claim has to be settled against the financier and not to the insured.

Address-

The address of the insured to which all communications in respect to the insurance contract should be sent is important. There is a practice among agents to direct the communications of their clients through them. It is better to make communications direct than routing through agents, as there are chances of delay or failures in passing them on the right time. For example, a renewal notice if not reached on time can put you in trouble if a claim comes during the lapsed time or you can lose your No Claim Bonus.

Period of Insurance-

Always check the date of issuance of the policy. Delay can happen in policy issuance even if you had paid cash for renewal to your agent. Always ensure that your policies are renewed at least a day before the date of expiry. Because, in case if an event occurs even in an hour's gap between policy expiry and renewal, the claim will not be considered.

Sum Insured-

Ensure that correct estimate of the assets are made, to avoid the risk of under insurance or over insurance. For commercial policies, the average value of the products in your premises and their possibilities of wear and tear should be mentioned. Don't ever compromise on asset value for getting a lower premium. Cross checking the insured amount and value of your assets on a regular basis is highly recommended.

Things Covered and Not Covered-

Insurance companies today sell products in combinations as package policies, both pre underwritten and underwritten after considering the needs of customers in different segments. Ensure that your policy covers all your needs, considering all risk factors associated with your product service or belongings.

Deductibles-

Always check if there are any special conditions attached to the policy like loadings, voluntary / compulsory excesses. For a bargaining customer, the agent / company would give the policy at lesser rates compromising any of the mentioned. This could trouble you at the time of making a claim.

Take time to go through the underwriting guidelines to know about the coverage, extensions, riders, omissions, voluntary / compulsory deductibles. These may vary from product to product and company to company.

Third Party Insurance

The obligations of the insured in relation to the subject matter of insurance to those who are associated with it in case of occurrence of a claim are covered under the third party section of the policy.

For example, if a fire damages a customer's car in your workshop, you are liable to your customer also. In auto-loans third-party component is compulsory. But in others we can make a choice considering the possibilities.

Carefully choose them in consultation with an expert in the field and check with the policy documents whether all are covered.

Policy Endorsements

If there are errors in the policy, it can get endorsed from the insurer, but ensure that you receive the endorsement certificate duly signed and stamped from the branch.

Policy Cancellation

All policy holders have the right to cancel a policy within 15 days of receipt of the policy document, if they are not satisfied with the policy terms and conditions or on grounds of misrepresentation, non-disclosure of material facts or non-cooperation of the insured. Refund of the premium will be made, subject to deduction of a proportionate risk premium for the period on cover and the expenses incurred by the insurer on inspection.

It is suggested that you get all your insurance needs fulfilled by a single company. This will help build a good relationship which is useful both in terms of discounts as well as claims.
